An apostille and what is known as a “seen for legalisation” are types of certification for public documents for international purposes. Translations for submission to government authorities in other countries usually need an apostille. The process for certification of a translated document involves the following steps:

• wordup translates the document
• a notary certifies the translated document
• the State Chancellery certifies the notary’s signature with an apostille

The apostille serves as the standard form of certification among all the states that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961. It confirms the authenticity of the signature and position of the official who signed the document as well as of the seal on the document, if there is one.

If a Swiss document is going to be used in a state not party to the Hague Convention, the State Chancellery can issue a “seen for legalisation” rather than an apostille.
