Language-specific typesetting

Language-specific typesetting refers to the professional typographic arrangement and formatting of texts in different languages. In this context, translated content is integrated into a layout in a way that creates a linguistically appropriate, typographically clean and visually consistent look. The aim is that all language versions of a document have the same level of quality, readability and design impact as the original.

Typesetting in languages that use non-Roman scripts or have different typographic conventions can be particularly demanding. While many European languages use the Roman alphabet, completely different symbols and sentence structures are used for other languages: Arabic and Hebrew, for instance, which use left-to-right scripts, Chinese and Japanese, with their complex characters, or Thai, which combines symbols in specific ways. For languages like these, it is essential to use the suitable fonts, as not all fonts are able to correctly depict all of the symbols necessary. In addition, the direction of writing, the spacing, line breaks, hyphenation and punctuation all have to be adjusted to reflect the usage in the given language. Text length can also vary significantly from one language to the next, making a flexible layout that can be adapted accordingly.

Another important element of foreign language typesetting is the review of sentences by qualified translators. They check the entire document not only for the correct use of language but also for all other relevant aspects. These include the use of the right characters, correct direction of writing, appropriate line breaks, complete content, correct terminology and the typographic representation of numbers, date formats or units. This ensures that the final document is perfect both in terms of visual appearance and language.
